I haven't tried a different splitter. I'll add that to my shopping list
tomorrow.

Will it be an issue the cables don't have gold contacts? Any idea why the
amplifier ruined the signal and didn't clear it up some?

In the past I've had problems with inferior splitters causing a signal
degradation. Have you tried getting a new splitter with gold contacts?
