The GNU compiler for java (gcj) can create both bytecode, much like javac,
and native code. The GNU interpreter for java (gij) is the VM. But neither
are near completeness needed for real-world java code. The last I checked
they were merging gcj with the classpath project, they didn't support AWT at
all, and were aiming for 1.3 compliance. The situation may be better now, but
I would still stick to the Sun compiler, unless you need to create native
code.
