It can be done, same for lots of java packages. Fedora/RedHat has been
doing that for a long time. The problem is that for most of these the
build system doesn't support it out of the box, so you have to
essentially write your own build system (e.g. ant doesn't allow
bootstrapping with gcj, but Fedora ships with a gcj built ant).
