Bingo! That was the magic - putting freetype2 down to 2.1.7 on all my
systems cleared up the firefox issue on every single one.

As a note to anyone else who's having these issues - if you've cleared
firefox off your system and are rebuilding it after downgrading
freetype2, you'll have to comment out the freetype patch line at the
beginning of firefox's BUILD file.

Now to find out how to get mplayerplug-in to build...
