hi

I have something similar on my PC, also using an 80GB HDD. I find that having
a seperate /boot as dufflebunk suggested is virtually essential. I also find
that 10GB is vastly excessive for root partitions as long as you don't
install big binary based packages (I have alpha centauri and homm3 for linux
:) and you keep /var/spool/sorcery on a different partition. My setup is as
follows:

hda1 (15MB): /boot. yes, that _is_ MB, I've not run out of space on it yet.
Perhaps it you compile everything into the kernal more space will be needed.
hda2 (1GB): swap. Personally I prefer swap partitions to files, but I guess
that's a personal preference.
hda5 (8GB): stable linux, currently slackware but hopefully smgl when 1.0
comes out
hda6 (4GB): unstable linux, a prototype of the stable partition
hda7 (4GB): testing linux, for playing with & breaking
hda8 (all the rest, >60GB): /home. I guess this could be split to allow a
seperate backup partition.

My /var/spool/sorcery is a symlink to a directory in /home. This gives 2
advantages: tarballs are shared across the installations on the PC (thus
saving on bandwidth and disk space) and I have my /home shared over NFS so
the same tarballs can be used on other machines on the network. Perhaps if
you have other big directories (/var/log ?) the same could be done with them.

The new virtual machine stuff in the upcoming 2.6 kernel should be
interesting
for doing stuff like this, but I don't know much about that.

Hope this helps

George
