Thanks for pointing out the interesting article. The evidence relating
CCD and a virus along with the fungal parasite Nosema is very strong.
However, the published studies have not looked at a thrid culprit the
systematic insecticide. That chemical will reduce the bee's immunity to
virus and parasite. The final answer to CCD is close but still does not
say what weakens the bee's immunity to both virus and parasite. However,
there is evidence that the insecticide is likely to be the final piece
of the puzzle, what causes CCD?
There may be some who are interested in the DNA virus culprit , I am

Iridoviruses contain a single copy linear dsDNA genome that ranges in
size from 150 to 280 kbp depending on viral species. The genomes appear
unique within the eucaryotic viruses in that they are terminally
redundant and cyclically permuted. This structure is a result of the
resolution of genome concatamers during DNA replication.During
replication multiple copies of a viral genome consisting of 10 genes (
forms a long concatamer . The resolution of this concatamer results in
packaged DNA lengths that contain a complete genome as well as
duplicated copies of some genes (terminal redundancy). The ends of each
of these packaged DNAs differs from one virus particle to the next
(cyclic permutation).
Replication proceeds in 5 stages:
1) Virus particles enter the cell by pinocytosis and uncoating occurs.

2) Viral DNA is transported to the cell nucleus where host
macromolecular synthesis is rapidly shutdown. Transcription is initiated
by virally modified host RNA polymerase II.

3) Parental DNA is used to produce genome and greater than genome length
DNA. This becomes the template for cytoplasmic replication.

4) Progeny DNA is transported into the cytoplasm where large concatamers
(A concatemer is a long continuous DNA molecule that contains multiple
copies of the same DNA sequences linked in series) of viral DNA are
formed by replication by the rolling circle model. Transcription of very
late transcripts may also take place in the cytoplasm.The final viral
chromosome is termanily redundant. If genetic information is represented
by ABCDEFGH
then a terminally redundant sequence can be ABCDEFGHAB.

5) Concatamers are resolved into packaged lengths, possibly by a headful
packaging approach. Virions exit the cell by budding or cell lysis.
