another resource that may be useful is the series of posters by Diane Schatz, published by Rain: Journal of Appropriate Technology (Portland, OR) 25-30 years ago. They are detailed visions of what a city/town would look like, though focus more on solar collectors, transportation, etc., than on specific garden plants (though there's a lot of greenery, too). They're b&w line drawings, so that people could color them if they wanted (one version was published in color). Though Rain no longer exists in anything like its previous incarnation, the posters are probably floating around somewhere. A version of them appeared on the cover of Rainbook and maybe other books published by Rain, and on a few covers of the magazine.
