Hi Keith, (and all others permaculture enthusiasts/practitioners around the
globe.)

We recently asked the 300+ members in the audience at the Peak Oil
Conference in Yellow Springs, Ohio, "How many of you are actively gardening?"

I am based in Sydney, Australia about 40-50 inland from the coastline which
is the furthest I have ever lived and had my first experience of frosts on my
herbs which have just started to spring back as the heat (heat wave) is
hitting us here, still the early part of spring and it's regularly over 30'c
here. (normally mid 20's)
I do garden, enjoying a much larger space as I previously lived in a small
terrace and had about 2 square metres of garden with some herbs and greens.
Now have a large house block (1/4 to 1/2 acre) with rased vegetable garden,
plus more gardens along fences that have mixed systems, established mango
tree and lemon tree. I eat predominately from here or from vegetables that
would otherwise be thrown out by the local greengrocer, purchasing staples
from the local co-op.

How many of you are landless (i.e. not owners of land or gardenable
property)? Does this stop you from gardening?
I now have some land, although not as much as I'd like, and don't own it so
can't change it as much as I'd like, but at my last home where I had 2 metres
square of garden we gardened in the nature strips and communal areas as well.

How many are actively creating complex perennial polycultures?
I think so! I work to build some multistorey systems eg corn and beans
together,

How many aquaculturists?
Not yet.

How many are still waiting to do these things?
Need to own my own place to do this.

How many are growing for market or trade? What are your principle
limiting factors?
Growing for Fundraising for Permaculture group. Looking to grow more herbs
for trade.

How many in the nursery trade?
Previously

How many landscapers?
Not yet

How many designer / consultants?
I do some education at shows etc with Permaculture North in Sydney and have
given demonstrations/workshops and worked with individuals around gardening
in small spaces, urban sustainability

Can these questions be answered and quantified in a forum like this?
I think it's good to know what others are doing, it's inspiring. I know when
I read a gardening blog/journal I am always out planting and trying out new
ideas the next day or so.

How many use rock dusts as fertility enhancers (for the garden)?
Not sure what this means
