It's interesting that many of the plants on this allelopathy list are
grasses. Grasses as a whole evolved much more recently than the flowering
plants--they arrived in conjunction with mammals (i.e. grazers and grass
co-evolved). Makes me wonder if grasses have more sophisticated chemistry
than the more ancient flowering plants, and somehow figured out how to
squelch the growth of other vegetation.
