Dear All ,

This is the promised progress report from Panariti , Greece . I
implemented most if not all of your suggestions . I insulated well first ,
covered windows and doors with excess blankets , got a solid fuel stove ,
put in a very long exhaust pipe from the stove (a very , very , very good
idea) , shut down all rooms that are not of critical importance , stacked
snow against north facing walls , kept eating , wore layers (peeled as the
temp rose , added layers as it got colder) , kept clothes on in bed
(especially me wooly hat ;-) got some friends to visit and we all huddled
;-) (especially at night ;-O ;-) and slowly but surely the temperature rose
until now we can walk around half naked ;-O , which makes it far more
interesting at night ;-) So this is a happy ending to a cold Grecian tale
;-)

What I would like to know now is how I can arrange things so that I can
stop burning solid fuel and make the whole situation less destructive and
more sustainable . Trombe walls and lots of solar south facing glazing is
really out of the question because I am about 1650 ft shy of a ridge that
completely surronds me in a U shape and I am NE facing . In addition I am at
3000+ ft asl so I am often 'in the clouds' so to speak . Consequently , my
winter solar exposure is fairly limited . Any ideas would be most welcome
cos it breaks my heart watching lovely logs going up in smoke ;-((

Yours in hopeful anticipation ,

Andrew.
