Lawrence, When we ran a market farm out of the crmpi site, we made lots of
compost, but since converting all the beds to forest garden we have only
done cold compost, sheet mulching or just mulching. I also have a slopeing
straw yard which generates lots of compost material, with chicken energy and
gravity , but I put it out in the forest garden without it heating up .
Much of the fertility and many of the bugs and microbs are killed during
the compost process. We put the stuff on and let the worms do the rest.
There are exceptions where you might want to compost . To kill pathagens
and brack down other compounds, but hopefully
the material you start with is clean, and does not need the fire. I have a
hammock strung where I can see the bottom of the chicken strawyard. When
that area fills up, I move that material to the forest garden for the worms.
They turn the material into worm castings. If you can improve on this
system let me know. jerome
