Hi Frank,

Next time you have a bunch of cut brush you need to do something with,
chuck it in one of your smaller eroding gullies. Take your best guess
at putting it where it won't wash away right off (hint: start high in
the gully), and/or put some stakes or rocks or etc. behind it to keep
it in place for a while. Then watch it and see what happens.

Either it will slow the water flow and start to collect organic matter
being washed down into it, or something else will happen. If something
else happens (short of a catastrophic flood, anyhow), watch it to see
what and why. Then adjust your design for whatever isn't working the
way you want it to, and watch it to see what happens.

Repeat as necessary until it starts working.

Then apply what works to similar situations in other gullies. Or try
several different things in different gullies (like wire baskets full
of rocks, or maybe just piles of rocks) and see which ones work the
best; then apply those to other gullies.

The trouble with not being willing to repeat others' mistakes (or make
our own new ones and harvest them ;-) is that we may never actually get
around to doing anything.

Go for it.

cheers,
John S.
