Currently, if you need thatch for your tropical theme bar,
f'rinstance, you'd generally buy it pre-prepared and shipped in from some
not-totally-plasticized part of the world.

From what I read the thatch used in Europe was giant reed grass (fragmites sp. - my spelling a guess here). This is frequently found growing on road sides in the midwest due largely to it's salt tolerance.
