1) Topic index pages, i.e. a browse facility giving users standard things to search for.

I've found that 1) is very useful and tends to get used a lot.
Its good for users who don't know what they are looking for
giving the user hints as to what might be fun to search for.

This sort of stuff could be considered to be a front end issue (i.e. bear/steph). But might want to have the pages automatically generated
so might need some hooks from the backend to provide the necessary info.

I think this would be stored queries, so part of the DB/data engine/back end.
That way they would be available to all clients, instead of just one that implements this on the client side.

Could eventually go so far as to have a "Personal PIW" where users with community logins could save their own fave queries.
