What do you mean by "preferred pollen source?"
I thought that any variety could pollinate any other variety.
Are you implying that they don't do that very well and that you need a
specific pollinating variety?

It is my understanding that the honeyberries that many of us planted
years ago (I planted some 25 years ago or so) were from Russian
origin. Mine fruted one or twice and never again. The current "crop"
of varieties are from Japanese material. Hence the Haskap name.
Supposedly these new selections are better at fruiting than the old
stuff. Berry Blue is the preferred variety for a pollen source. We
will be offering Berry Blue plus Tundra and Borealis. We have all
three on trial now on our farm in Maine. None have fruited yet but
are just getting established.

I got 25 Crimson Passion from Honeyberry USA, this year,& tho they
were tiny tissue culture plants 8" high, most of them are a very
vigorous 3' now after 2 1/2 months in the ground. I'm assuming the
Haskaps are tissue culture as well.
I also have been really annoyed by the Haskap name until I discovered
that the word is an ancient Ainu word for the fruit, which convinced
me it was a good choice of name. Plus without "honeysuckle" in the
name people's invasive plant alarms won't go off so quickly.
