As usual the voles beaverized a number of our Nankings this winter. A big problem is that Nankings tend to grow shrubby and it's not at all easy to protect them when they have a half-dozen branches coming off within six inches of the ground (and the other problem is that we had a foot and a half of snow cover for about six weeks, so the bark got stripped much higher than I'd wrapped them!) I can't help wondering whether there is some kind of distasteful goop I could just paint on in early winter...

I'm using Clipper tubes which are typically sold for first year grapes.
They come in different lengths but I use mostly 24" & 32". Since they are
one piece of plastic that wraps, they are easy to take off & put back on,
you don't have to cut the tubes to get them off. Plus they end up being a
lot cheaper than other kinds of tree tubes. I get mine from here, very good
prompt service & customer service.

I've tubed about 600 trees & vines in the last 3 weeks....

Hi mIEKAL,

I'm wondering if you would share what you are using for 'tubing' around
your trees???

I've been using hardware cloth (1/4" x 1/4") tubes about 18" height x 6"
diameter and it is very effective and a great place to put tree labels. But
hardware cloth is very expensive and I'm sure it will rust off to
ineffectiveness at some point. I've found one tree that had a gap where the
cloth overlapped (sometimes the cloth kinks a bit when I twist it into the
ground and I obviously didn't catch that one) and a mouse moved in, made a
house for the winter and ate my Giant Nanking Cherry from T&T Seeds,
Manitoba. This year with the feet and feet of snow we had, they got over
the tops for the first time ever and ate off a plum and an apple. I should
have been stomping down the snow, but by the time I realized I needed too,
the snow was hip deep and I couldn't!

I know that the commercial guys use some kind of plastic tubing, but I'm
not sure what.

I've been spending the last week tubing every last prunus
in the ground.
