- Subject: [NAFEX] Which botanical key is correct?
- Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2011 09:20:32 -0600
A simple scientific definition of a (plant) Genus is that it is comprised of a group of plants that can interbreed. When we compare the flowering habit between Chokecherry and plants of the Genus Prunus. it seems clear that Chokecherry is not a Prunus. If Chokecherry would be a Prunus, some plant breeder would have crossed it with plums to get a dangling of plums that resembles grapes except that the fruit would be huge. Clearly(?), Chokecherry is not a Prunus and its name, Padus nana is more fitting.
