I've always had a hard time with sweet cherry so it's not new to me
that prunus scions have a hard time staying dormant in storage.

Mark, I might agree with what you say of keeping a constant
temperature for scions. I read this here a year earlier as well. As
you were describing leakage inspections I thought through a trick that
should permanently work to keep fluids and moist air separated. So I
came home with some glass and plastic fitting together nicely and here
it is.

The goop seals the scion tubes at the top and the fluid fills in from
side independently, so it works real nice, and nothing can freeze
since it's RV antifreeze. Two insertion probe thermometers (not shown)
are on the way. One can be poked into one of the #9 corks at the top.

I'm up to finding out if the orientation of the well has anything to
serve for the better or worse..

Later,
Rupert.

I'm not an expert grafter, but I've had some problems w/ scion storage and
learned a few things about it. My only refrigeration is a frost/free
refridgerator which is also used for food. Our refridgerator doesn't seem
to keep a stable enough temperature to keep the scions from breaking bud
before it's time to take them out and graft them.

Placing the scions in a good quality sealed bag, placing the bag in a jug of
water, then placing the jug in the fridge seems to keep the temperature of
the scions stable enough to maintain dormancy.

No matter how good the bags, water sometimes slowly seeps in, so I check
them about once a month and remove any water inside the bags.

I used to use a disinfectant, but quit and haven't noticed any mold
problems. I don't seal the ends of the scions either.
