My seeds were from Baker's and had the characteristics of the nightshade family. I dealt with the debris accordingly...Pat

To the list,

I had never heard of garden huckleberries, just huckleberries (Gaylussacia) and blueberries (Vaccinium). However, Pacific Northwest natives call the wild Vaccinium by the name huckleberry.

However, a search on Google turned up some interesting information on garden huckleberries (Solanum Melanocerasum). In a gardening list, a writer posted:

"Just a couple clarifications here.

"First, the Garden Huckleberry is NOT in any way related to the blueberry. Blueberries, Bilberries, and Cranberries are in one family and the nightshades are in another family all together.

"There is also a lot of confusion about the "Wonderberry" - quite justified though. About a century ago, Luther Burbank introduced a hybrid using the garden huckleberry and another edible nightshade, naming his creation the Sunberry. To his consternation, the distributor decided to rename the plant Wonderberry, and to his further frustration other nurseries started selling Garden Huckleberries under the name Wonderberry. (To further add to the confusion, you will sometimes see Wonderberries sold as Huckleberries.)

"FYI, the name scientific name given to the Wonderberry by Burbank was Solanum burbankii."

Hey All,

I've grown the Garden Huckleberry in the past and loved them in pie as well. The following year I tried the Sunberry, aka Wonderberry, and the berries were quite a bit smaller. I would have to say, that overall, I liked the Garden Huckleberry better but would still like to give the Sunberry another shot. I am also looking at growing the Schwarwenberren and the Chiquelite berries which seem to be closely related to the first two I have mentioned. Has anyone grown all of these for comparison?

Good luck with all your harvests,
