FWIW, the name of the apple should be Airlie Red Flesh. It was found in Airlie, Oregon by the late Bill Schulz. Pink Pearl has been irregular in coloring depending on the year.
I have a red flesh crab that was one of Professor Nels Hansen's selections. It varies from deep red to a rather brownish red depending on the year. It's tart, but no more so than a lot of tart eating apples. Mine doesn't keep all that well and it's too early. It's cleaner than other red flesh crabs I've tried, though. I have a number of other red flesh apples as well. One of the more interesting is the columnar type "Maypole". It's a seedling of Macintosh and shows it. Good ornamental and the apples are large enough to eat, but rather tart.

<x-tad-bigger>I have had some interest in the "red fleshed" apples although most of them seem pretty tart to me.  If you haven't seen Greenmantle's website on their Rosetta collection you might want to take a look, </x-tad-bigger><x-tad-bigger>http://www.greenmantlenursery.com/fruit/rosetta-apples.htm</x-tad-bigger><x-tad-bigger>.  I have the Arlie's Red Flesh, Hidden Rose, Pink Pearl, Mott's Pink, and at one time I had Alamata but it never grew right for me.  I also have the Rubiyat which hasn't fruited yet.  Besides being too tart for me they tend to be scab susceptible.  Here in western Washington we need varieties that are resistant to scab.  They do make beautiful applesauce too.  Pink Pearl is the best one of the bunch that I have grown.</x-tad-bigger>
