Thanks Richard and Ginda.  The transliteration problem you mention makes sense (trying to make sounds in a language that don't normally exist.)  We have the "th" sound, that must be tough for Orientals to transliterate, since that don't have the sound.  Similarly people of India roll their "R"s and Germans have some throaty sound they make.  It'd be difficult to transliterate those in our language.  Thanks for the explanation.

Obil'naja (or Obilinaya) is a Prunus salicina (Japanese) hybrid with a Myrobalan plum that as Ginda says the name has been changed a little by two different translations from Russian. Which is easy as Russian is difficult to translate. Try translating a language with 32 letters into a language with 26 letters. Apparently when Raintree Nursery quoted the name they left out the " ' " in the name as recorded by the USDA at Davis, California.

Plum question.  Are Obilinaya and Obilnaja plum the same thing?  They're both from Russia.  Dr. Bob Anderson, (retired) Cornell, recommended Obilinaya for New York but doesn't mention anything about Obilnaja.  I had assumed they were the same, are they?  Is it possible it's just a variant in spelling?
