A similar thing is done to fig trees (and roses) for people in zones too cold for them to survive the winter on their own.  The trees (or roses) have their roots severed on one side so that the plant can be laid into a trench and be buried for the winter.  This is generally done just after the onset of dormancy (or before the really cold weather hits).

 

I’ve done neither, though I do wrap my outdoor fig very well just after Thanksgiving each year and unwrap before Mother’s day.

Jerry- The trees in Siberia were trained to a trellis system that allowed them to survive the winter. They were protected by snow or given winter protection. There were several people who have grown peaches in the Canadian Prairies using winter protection of some sort. With a little bit of innovative trellis design and a lot of winter protection they produced some fruit. Reliance and some of the Vineland or Harrow

Varieties that ripen early and have high winter chill requirements ie

1000+ hr are worth trying. Peaches that can tolerate -25C or better seem to work the best. There were also some peach seedlings at
CRDC South in Brooks Alberta back in the 1950's that were brought back from the Korean war. They survived there, but the quality wasn't

very good. Unfortunately they don't exist anymore. I believe there were also some peach seedlings at Morden around the same time.
