I'm remembering exactly what you're describing
about Red Delicious.
My Grandfather had a Red Delicious tree which was
probably from the 'original' stock, and it was absolutely 'delicious' when the
apples were ripe and ready. Snappy, crisp, sweet and juicy. They
went soft and mealy really fast, though. By Christmas, they were just
nothing, but off the tree as they ripened they were outstanding. I'm
trying to grow one to replace that memory. Hope I've got the right
one. There are so many 'bad' ones around it is almost embarrassing to
admit I'm trying to grow a Red Delicious. Never give in!
