I must be getting old. I've seen so many cycles of "bashing Red Delicious" on the list and in POMONA before the internet that it's a cliche. Guess Red Delicious has one very good function - to give new people on this list a topic to start them off.
Incidentally, the apple was originally just "Delicious". The "Red" came after Golden Delicious was introduced, both to distinguish it, and because the red sports had started to appear.
