The fact that the seed seperates easily, I presume to mean it is a freestone or semi-freestone. As most Asian (Japanese) plums are clingstones, this limits the number of possible cultivars. There are only a very few Japanese plums that are freestones. None of the orginal Japanese Plums imported by Luther Burbank were freestones. Only after crossing with other plum species did some few freestone varieties emerge.

The fact that it is maturing this late in the season also limits the choice of varieties. There is a variety called Angeleno that ripens about now but I am not sure if it is a freestone or semi-freestone.

4041 is the code for red plums. 4042 is the code for
"large red plums". Large plums may actually be priced
more than pluots (3278) in some areas.

Heart shaped - skin from light to dark red with some
areas of bloom.
Skinny little stem - how did that ever hold such a
big fruit?

Inside is very pale orange and finely textured which
is why it slices
so neatly.

If it is a pluot, why would they label it 4042?
Pluots cost a lot
here, so someone is losing money if that is what it
is.
