Hallo Lon,
at Europe we have different Kaki cultivars (Diospyros kaki) with different pollinating possibilities.
In some cases the non-astringency is dependent on the point of pollination.
The pollinated fruit is called “Vanilla-Kaki” because you can eat is immediately, but it has many seeds.
The non-pollinated is astringent first! See e.g. PVNA cultivars:
PCA-cultivars (Pollination Constant Astringent)
PVA- cultivars (Pollination Variant Astringent)
PCNA- cultivars (Pollination Constant Non Astringent)
PVNA- cultivars (Pollination Variant Non Astringent)
ciao

Jim Claypool, the private breeder of American persimmons in Illinois told me how someone he knew of, possibly the late Prof. J. C. McDaniel, who theorized that chestnut pollen could stimulate American persimmons to set. I can't verify it, though I have had a number of persimmons here in Oregon which set seedless fruit in the absence of male trees, and there are plenty of chestnuts on my place. When male persimmons are nearby, the trees set normally seeded fruit.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but I recall reading that
persimmons can be tricked into believing they have been pollenated by
chestnut pollen.
Why? I don't recall the original source mentioning a reason.
