I asked a similar question last June. I will forward those answers to you. Lon was nice enough to make Rosa dumalis seeds available to me. I cold-stratified them in the fridge and just planted them in the seed starter a week or so ago. They're a bit leggy because even a south-facing window isn't as good as keeping them outside. I put them out in the sun and they're doing better.
I bought a "Wild Spice" rugosa rose last year. I've eaten a couple of the hips and they're pretty fuzzy inside. Better than your average rose hip and a nice size. They are beautiful to look at on the bush. However, the Rosa dumalis, though it produces smaller hips, has a slightly better taste.
I've heard some folks use Rosa canina for hips as well.
