My neighbor has a very old eastern cedar in his
yard, so CAR was a big concern for me when I planted trees this spring. I
contacted a horticulture professor from MU. She
indicated the fungus travels long distances. In case you decide
to add more apple trees, there are supposed to be many varieties that are highly
resistant/immune. Some that I have planted this spring are Liberty,
Redfree, Williams Pride, Enterprise, Nova Easygro. I understand
Macfree is also very resistant. The disease appears to be very
cultivar specific. Last year I saw an apple tree ate up with CAR and
another tree not more than 150' away untouched.
