Tom,
I've enjoyed them in NH, too, but when I lived in NJ they were terrible. Too hot, I think. They don't keep worth beans, so I pretty much only eat them in season fresh off the tree. But when we "PYO" I always grab some Macs because they taste great.
I wasn't especially recommending Macs for out of their region, just illustrating my comment re sweet cider.

Sweet cider or hard cider? Pretty much any juicy eating apple is okay
for sweet cider. Around here, Macintosh is popular both for eating and
for "cider". Come to think of it, I kind of like it after it goes
fizzy, too.
