Chestnut blight does not stay around because it lives on everything but because it attcks only the above ground portions of chestnut trees. When these trees reach 6-12" in diameter, they succumb to blight and die back to their roots. The trees then resprout from the living roots and start the cycle again, all the while keeping chestnut blight alive and well. There are myriad chestnut trees of various ages, but none more than about 12 inches in diameter, in the forests here in the Hudson Valley.

Here's the source list for Cornus mas from my book Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden.
Thanks!
Does C. mas get the sudden oak death?
I don't think anyone knows all the plants that can carry sudden oak death just yet. It seems to cause a minor infection with non-descript symptoms on a bunch of stuff, including blueberry and maple. Sort of like Chestnut blight, which apparently lives on almost everything, which is why American Chestnuts are still coming down with it, despite there not being enough American Chestnuts to sustain a fussier disease.
