Does anyone grow Cornus mas in zone
3-4? I have a small plant of Cornus mas 'Aurea' which has done
well for me so far--it's about 3ft tall- and not experienced any winter
damage. The University of Wisconsin Arboretum has some large specimens
which originated from Yugoslav seed that have probably experienced almost
-40F.
A local nursery, Jung's, has bare root plans of
C. mas 'Red Star' and 'Pioneer' available for sale. I'm sure that
Jung's got the plants from One Green World, but I can't find any independent
information on their likely hardiness. They're supposed to be from the
Ukraine, which can get cold in some areas, but the Crimea, which is about a zone
20, is part of the Ukraine. Any advice on the likely hardiness of either
of the above two C. mas cultivars?
Thanks, Steve Herje, Lone Rock,

Herre's the source list for Cornus mas from my book Uncommon
Fruits for Every Garden. I woulld not worry about buying a plant from the
south. A nursery shipping now should have had the plant in cold storage if it
was bare root; if in a pot, it doesn't matter as long as you wait to plant it,
if necessary. Does C. mas get the sudden oak death?

I have two cornus mas, but I think they are too far apart to
pollinate. I've decided that rather than move the smaller one, I will buy a
new one this fall. (My soil is rocky, and if the roots have established
much, it will be very hard to move the tree.) I will put it near the one
that is doing better. There's more sun on that side.
Any advice on
good cultivars, and/or good people to buy from? I prefer to buy from east of
the rockies, partly because the shipping is less stressful for the plants,
and partly because I'm afraid of sudden oak death. (Although I suppose we
will all be seeing that all too soon.) Also, it's always easier to buy from
the same climate or north, rather than from the south. A southern plant may
have broken dormancy in the spring before I can get it in the ground, and
may not have hardened off in the fall.
I am in eastern Massachusetts,
zone 6.
