I'm going to add my 2 cents. When I was a kid in the 1950s in central
Wisconsin, the only apples that I remember by name were Wolf River (big
enough to last all afternoon) and Duchess. Later, in Southwestern Wisconsin,
I became familiar with Cortland (my mother's favorite) and many others.
Now, in western Wisconsin, zone 4, I have a Melrose that I am still eating
and a Newtosh (from St Lawrence Nursery) that I really like. I don't care
for McIntosh around here, but like Empire. My Duchess is non-descript. The
neighbors have a Wolf River--still big, but best for pies or applesauce or
butter. My Gala did well but the deer and the neighbors Scottish Highland
cattle ate the tree--actually stood on their hind legs and pulled it apart.
I wonder if the bark and buds are as sweet as the fruit.
Most of the others on your list would probably not make it here, although I
didn't think that the Gala and the Melrose would either. I had ordered them
in the winter before we moved from a warmer part of the state, and I wasn't
going to just through them out when they arrive. So far the Melrose has made
it through 15 winters.
I enjoy learning more about others preferences in fruit.

Jim, in Menomonie, WI

Just for fun, these are the apples scions I've got
this year that I will attempt to graft this year; I
could use any "that's a terrible apple" advice.
Hardiness and length of season don't matter here, but
ability to handle heat and sun does.

Wolf River
Rubinette
Arkasas Black
Sops of Wine
Winter White Pearmain
Tomkins King
Melrose
Spigold
Hudson's Golden Gem
Wynnoche early
Roxbury Russet
Blenheim Orange
Zabergau Reinette
Esopus Spitzenberg
Braeburn
Gravenstein
Yellow Newton Pippen
Gala
Winesap

Of course I doubt they'll all make it...
