Given that Chapman planted apple seed, the product was most probably cyder.
After all folk used to drink a prodigious amount of alcohol bearing drink.
They laughed a lot more than we do and were not politically correct.

        I saw a program a few years ago that stated that Johnny Appleseed, who
legend says spread apple seeds throughout a large area to supply food for
people, was actually planting apple seeds so that hard cider could be
produced.  Therefore, he was promoting making alcohol available rather
than food.  Has anyone heard of this aspect of the legend, is it likely
true or is the "official" legend correct?  Just curious, no biggie either
