Hi,
Hard cider was put out of business by the beer industry, which engage political cronies to enact burdensome regykations that made it impossible for hard cider manufacturers to stay in business. Beer did not out compete hard cider, corpoarate beer beat it death with regulation
If memory serves... The regulations had to due with the transport of hard cider, that limited it's distribution, and availability, while beer flooded the market.

Tom

It's likely true. I've read in a few sources that (hard) cider was a staple in colonial times, up through Johnny Appleseed's day. "The botany of Desire" has a nice chapter on apples, including their use in hard cider in the US and Johnny's role. Hard cider in the US died during prohibition, and urbanization prevented it from coming back - it was a product usually produced by each household, not a commercial product.

I saw a program a few years ago that stated that Johnny Appleseed, who
legend says spread apple seeds throughout a large area to supply food for
people, was actually planting apple seeds so that hard cider could be
produced. Therefore, he was promoting making alcohol available rather
than food. Has anyone heard of this aspect of the legend, is it likely
true or is the "official" legend correct? Just curious, no biggie either
way. Have a Good One! Love, Peace and Perception
