To clarify, I have two concerns about summer renewal pruning of currants
and gooseberries: (1) Will fewer dormant buds below the soil line break
than if I were to prune in before leafout in spring? (2) Will new wood
that is produced have fruit buds or will I have to wait the growing
season after next to have fruit on branches I prune about this time of
summer. -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn. (USDA Zone 4b)

This would tend to reduce vigor, right, listers? I'd prune lighter than
you
would for spring pruning.

I know that the usual recommendation is to renewal prune currants and
gooseberries in early spring. However, I was wondering whether one
could prune in mid-summer, just after the fruit has been picked,
instead.
