To address the issue of breeding chestnuts for size and flavor....at the UCONN
farm they are doing just that...
The Chinquapin is an eastern nut that crosses with other chestnuts and they
are working for a combo of size, flavor and orchard type trees....with some
of
the best characteristics of Japanese, Chinese, American and European trees.
A lot more $ needs to be spent crossing and selecting , but some of that is
currently being done. Whether it goes far enough to solve our specific
problems with chestnut growing in the US is subject to speculation.
Typically, each
program has a few volunteers and one paid breeder....not exactly a high
priority these days
when budgets are tight.
