Ed,
Ed, you mentioned you've grown 20 or so
siblings of Cox Orange. Holstein is on my short list of what to plant in
the next spring or two. Have you grown it? Opinions?
Preferences concerning others?
I have one Cox Orange on standard rootstock
that is only 2 years old so I've got a while before it fruits but I'm looking
forward to it.
Thanks.

Orville:
My best guess is that both your trees and
trees from the local orchard are mislabeled or they are NOT true
Suncrisp. I've grown them for years (formerly called NJ-55) and have
eaten them from other orchards and they most represent a true Cox taste of any
of its sibs (possibly a slight bit sweeter). And I've grown Cox Orange
for years as well as possibly 20 or more of its more famous sibs including
Kidd's Orange which can be quite good under decent conditions when near
maturity.
Ed, doing okay in central Ohio
Mr. Fackler:
I really appreciate
the information about the Kent and Suntan apples. I do have a question about
Suncrisp though.
I have a Suncrisp (on
EMLA 9) that fruited for the first time this year. The taste seemed very
bland. There was not enough of anything - sweet, sour, aromatic, or flavor.
There also is a local orchard that had Suncrisp (on EMLA 9) for the first
time this year, and all of the ones I got from them (and I deliberately got
ones from underripe to overripe) were the same. I also could not taste
anything that resembled Cox Orange Pippin. Is it possible that it takes a
few years to develope more of anything or could the climate, rootstock, or
something else be the problem?
I also had Queen Cox
(on EMLA 26) fruit for the first time this year. I missed spraying it,
so it was wormy and a little green when I picked it. It was
still Wonderful . It has everything that makes a Cox great
- the sweet-acid balance, the fantastic flavor, and the aromatics. I would
sooner have a slice of the Queen Cox than a bushel of
the Suncrisp.
I definitely am a fan
of high flavor balanced apples, so that probably has something to do
with my feelings about Suncrisp. Thanks in advance for any info or
comments.

Subject: RE: [NAFEX] Apple
questions.
Orville:
I grew both varieties
in Southern Indiana during the late 80s and 90s.
Kent (Flower of Kent is one syn.) is actually
quite large and flavor barely okay---not great.
Suntan. Great apple, but like its parent
Court Pendu Plat it is very shy in production. Also I recall that in
some years heat would cause a lot of internal breakdown prior to
maturity. (FYI, many Cox sibs have this problem in the typical hot
humid midwest summer/fall.)
If the Cox flavor is
what you are after, try Suncrisp. Although it has problems
(sensative to most all diseases), it is incredibly productive and its
flavor is a great complex (richly sweet) package.

Hello,
Does anyone have
any experience growing either one of the following apples?
1. Kent (Malling Kent)(Cox
Orange Pippin X Jonathan cross) Described as medium size conical fruit
with light red skin and smooth russet radiations from the stem end.
Crisp white flesh that is rich with lots of sugar and acidity, quite
aromatic.
2. Suntan (Cox Orange Pippin
X Court Pendu Plat cross) Described as medium-large size with
gold-yellow skin flushed and striped orange-red. Yellowish-cream flesh
that is sweet-sharp, juicy, rich, robustly aromatic, and has very good
flavor.
Thanks,
