Orville:

I grew both varieties in Southern Indiana during the late 80s and 90s.

Kent (Flower of Kent is one syn.) is actually quite large and flavor barely okay---not great.

Suntan.  Great apple, but like its parent Court Pendu Plat it is very shy in production.  Also I recall that in some years heat would cause a lot of internal breakdown prior to maturity.  (FYI, many Cox sibs have this problem in the typical hot humid midwest summer/fall.)

If the Cox flavor is what you are after, try Suncrisp.  Although it has problems (sensative to most all diseases), it is incredibly productive and its flavor is a great complex (richly sweet) package.

Hello,
Does anyone have any experience growing either one of the following apples?

1. Kent (Malling Kent)(Cox Orange Pippin X Jonathan cross) Described as medium size conical fruit with light red skin and smooth russet radiations from the stem end. Crisp white flesh that is rich with lots of sugar and acidity, quite aromatic.
2. Suntan (Cox Orange Pippin X Court Pendu Plat cross) Described as medium-large size with gold-yellow skin flushed and striped orange-red. Yellowish-cream flesh that is sweet-sharp, juicy, rich, robustly aromatic, and has very good flavor.

Thanks,
Orville Courtney
