Jacq:

While I'm not exactly certain about which "quarter" we speak, here
is my 2 proverbial cents worth.

1. Honeycrisp apple---A genuine breakthrough on eating quality re: its
unique crispness albiet some difficulty in growing it.
2. Gala apple--Prior to Honeycrisp this apple, perhaps more than any other
actually broke the "red" rut the industry was in, not to mention its
incredible ability to produce under an extreme range of climatical
conditions and/or locations.
3. Korean Giant (Olympic, Arirang, etc.) Asian pear. A truely remarkable
variety in that it can be grown without much care at all and produces decent
fruit, but also a great landscape speciman.
4. Navaho Blackberry. The first truely errect and thornless blackberry of
good quality.
5. Mars Grape. Outstanding quality for a "hardy" eastern type with is
resistant to many diseases.

Ed, sorta dreamin' in So. Ohio, pretending it is heaven...........

Dear NAFEXers,

Thanks to an idea sent to me by NAFEX member Allen Cosnow, we're going
to try a new regular feature in Pomona: Cultivar of the Quarter. Allen
suggested selecting a few fruit cultivars, and inviting member response
on experiences with those cultivars, to be gathered together for each
issue. The Fall Pomona is about to go out, but I could give you the
weekend to send me responses on the initial batch of cultivars, chosen
by Allen. So if you have any comments to make, for this time I'm taking
them by email ONLY because of time; in the future, regular mail will
work, too. Thanks!

Jackie

CULTIVARS ON WHICH TO COMMENT:

Red currant "Cherry"
Apricots "Moongold" and "Sungold"
Pear rootstock OHxF 513
Quince "Aromatnaya"
Apples "Honeycrisp" and "Rhode Island Greening"
