Title: Re: [NAFEX] Grow fruit higher than deer can reach?
P. betulafolia is the usual rootstock of choice for Asian pears in the west, as it is resistant to pear psylla.   Most of the P. bet. in the U.S. is a relatively cold tender type from the southern part of the species' range, though, so you have to decide if it will work for you.  I got some northern P. bet some years ago and the "trees" are shrubby little things mostly less than 10 feet tall, though some of the same material tested in Canada could take -40.  No commercial source of them, though.
You can also use P. communis, such as the OHxF types.

I am planning in the future to grow a limited number of Asian Pears.
What rootstock should I plan to use?
My plan is to go for a standard size Asian Pear tree, no dwarfing plan at this time.

Would Pyrus Betulifolia  (Betulifolia Pear) seedlings be an appropriate choice?

Would Pyrus Ussuriensis  (Harbin Or Sand Pear) seedlings be as good?
