Most commercial hosts would put ads on the mail, and Topica is no exception.
However, they at least give you a choice of where the ads go, and it's
easier to ignore an ad when it's at the bottom of a letter. However, my
problem with Yahoo is that since they absorbed E-groups, they messed up the
memberships of many of the list members. I, for one, can't even get into
the site. With a new host, at least it could be made more accessible.
For that matter, it doesn't have to be Topica. One of the members of the
lists I "own" could set up our own domain. He has already set up a
searchable archive for one of the other lists. That is, Topica's archives
are simply storage of the letters - you have to go through them one at a
time to find something.
So there are several options. The main thing is that the list needs to
be able to reach a reasonable agreement, or there's no point in bothering to
set up a new list.
