Ed
I have male persimmons, and my Meader has seeds. I am zone 5, And have
found so far that there is only one that ripens and drops hardy persimmon.
All other varieties I have tried do not drop and even after the leaves fall
and the persimmons look tempting, they are astringent unless you pick and
put in a plastic bag with couple apples for a week or two that mellows them
out. I have a Male and female seedling trees I found at a friends that grows
chestnuts. They have ripened and dropped. what few I had this year and were
great as always. All other ones are still green, and I know what to expect.
I am waiting for next year when about 8 more trial varieties should be
giving me some new samples. about 5 of these are from the Claypool
collection. Lucky has some that I am hoping will start for me next year.
They sound very promising.

Anyone have any recommendations for persimmon varieties in zone 5?
I assume that I would have to use the D. virginiana as a rootstock
since the lotus one and the kaki are too cold tender right?
Thanks.
PS I think that the Meader sounded like the best choice, no seeds,
self fertile, productive, annual, with fruit that has quality and
size, that is, if I recall accurately.
