Tom,

Hawthorn is Crataegus (like pear is Pyrus, apple is Malus, cherry and plums
are Prunus). There are many different species of Crataegus (as, also there
are many species of Prunus, Pyrus and of Malus). All four are part of the
Rosacae family, in which you will also find Amelanchier (Serviceberry, I
think) Potentilla, Spirea and the roses. Hawthorn can be used as root for
pear because it is genetically very close to Pyrus.

By the way, has anyone tried Potentilla for an extremely dwarfing rootstock
for pear and apple?

Claude
