Hawthorns are in the genus Crataegus. Like apples and pears, they are pome
fruits, but there are differences in leaf shape, core structure, and more.
It's a very diverse genus, with some having deeply lobed leaves (like some
of the commercial ornamental hawthorns, such as Paul's Scarlet), and various
other differences. Some grow in difficult places, like wet soils (even in
standing water). Generally they are smaller trees, or large bushes, compared
to apples or pears. Many of the hawthornes are graft compatible with pears,
and in some cases, apples. Fruit size ranges from pea size up to 2 inches
or more in diameter.
This is a rough definition.
