The duct tape is to hold together some of the equipment you’ve taken apart (to use for wilderness first aid splints and such) that can’t be “repaired” temporarily with the vet wrap.   ;-)

Avoid the use of duct tape on people.  It is designed to adhere to almost anything dry and not come off.

Another field option if there isn’t an “official” splint handy is the fairly sturdy fender of a western saddle. Tie using leather strips (like saddle strings) or whatever is available. A flank cinch billet can also be useful, or a rolled saddle blanket. Tack or equipment / gear parts also have potential for alternate use, such as a pocket knife or pen acting as a short splint. Irv mentioned vet wrap, which can be very useful for first aid (human or equine) and even some temporary repairs, etc.  Even so,  don’t forget the duct tape. ;-)
