Avoid the use of duct tape on people.  It is designed to adhere to almost anything dry and not come off. It does not stretch or breathe.  We have seen some career EMS services use duct tape to hold splints or even to tape a patient to a backboard because “its fast”.  Cleaning up afterward is not.  If you need tape carry 2” cloth surgical tape, such as Durapore from 3M or similar from Curad or private labels like Moore Medical. It is designed to be hypoallergencic, easy of skin, and cleans up easily.

It is not waterproof from outside in but it does breathe and usually is on cloth or paper so it cuts easily.  When teaching a first aid class duct tape is the last resort. About the only thing worse is wire because of its small diameter.  Taking a 2-4 hour basic first aid in the workplace course is helpful.

If you use rawhide or saddle strings make sure they are dry when tied. Rawhide can shrink over 30% between wet and dry.

Another field option if there isn’t an “official” splint handy is the fairly sturdy fender of a western saddle. Tie using leather strips (like saddle strings) or whatever is available. A flank cinch billet can also be useful, or a rolled saddle blanket. Tack or equipment / gear parts also have potential for alternate use, such as a pocket knife or pen acting as a short splint. Irv mentioned vet wrap, which can be very useful for first aid (human or equine) and even some temporary repairs, etc.  Even so,  don’t forget the duct tape. ;-)
