Another field option if there isn’t an “official” splint handy is the fairly sturdy fender of a western saddle. Tie using leather strips (like saddle strings) or whatever is available. A flank cinch billet can also be useful, or a rolled saddle blanket. Tack or equipment / gear parts also have potential for alternate use, such as a pocket knife or pen acting as a short splint. Irv mentioned vet wrap, which can be very useful for first aid (human or equine) and even some temporary repairs, etc.  Even so,  don’t forget the duct tape. ;-)
