Similarly, during a demonstration of POD we used coffee cans
(specifically the black and yellow 3 pounders from Chock full o nuts)
in old growth woods and lined up grid searchers. The idea was to confirm
the numbers in the MSO handbook-- spacing versus detection and build
confidence in the numbers presented. You could use untrained personnel and
hit the projection every time. No need for careful placement either, the
test director just took 15 numbered cans and threw them out in the woods.
The cans even blended in with the material on the forest floor.
