I agree with Tomi even though I don't own a Paso, but know a few.  They can be hot it seems due to their bloodlines, how they are fed, worked and trained just like any other breed.  Unfortunately, some show breeders/trainers breed for gait or winning and temperament is not always a priority.  I know one young Paso who had abusive training to prep for showing and it is questionable if he will ever be a reliable trail horse.  Dana

Jim,

I think it would extremely  interesting and educational if some one comprised a file of the breeds of equines that are currently being used as MSAR mounts.  I believe such a list of breeds would prove to be rather enlightening.

PS: I am not sure which Paso Breed you are referring to, but you may want to contact the manager of the Commonwealth Search and Rescue Team's Mounted Unit (near Roanoke VA) for a couple of pictures.  On May 2nd 2009, while deployed (on my TWH) on a search task at the Knight Search in Amherst County VA , I witnessed 2 MSAR Responders from the CSAR Mounted Unit whose horses were very calm and quiet! The breeds of those 2 horses were a Paso Fino and a Peruvian Paso.

Well I'm glad this came up as I was thinking it but not writing in!

In all my 40 years around horses I have yet to meet a Paso I would try to do SAR with. I can't imagine Pasos riding calmly, quietly and with forward looking attention, much less any attention span at all. No offense, just my humble opinion...

I realize any horse can be trainined to do just about anything. I've just never seen a Paso that was trained to be calm and quiet.

Jim
