Vaccines are supposed to be effective and safe before being approved for use
in the US. Most quarantines and movement controls are not highly publicized
here. The best consumer news, besides the state vet's office, is probably
the AAEP [American Association of Equine Practitioners] journal, The Horse,
and their on line "ask the vet" service.
Many diseases are weather dependent-- no rain, no mosquitoes, no West Nile.
Rabies is always around; botulism seems to vary with how the hay season is.
Potomac fever is now reported in the next state east of me.
It also seems to be related to shipping patterns. There are a lot of race
horses and show horses moving up and down the East Coast, never stopping
anywhere long enough to be watched and frequently not screened at every
stop.
